Tom Ingram racing in the BTCC at Silverstone

The Silverstone specialists: Who has the most BTCC wins on the 2024 grid?

Whenever the BTCC arrives at Silverstone, a surprise winner seems an inevitability, with no single driver of the current generation establishing dominance like Colin Turkington has at Croft with 12 wins, or Andy Rouse’s 18 in years past at Silverstone.

But who on the current grid holds the most wins around the home of British motorsport, and who will be hoping to add to their tally in their quest for the 2024 title?

Six wins

Tom Ingram

In an era that has largely been dominated by Colin Turkington and Ash Sutton when it comes to championships, its 2022 BTCC champion Tom Ingram who holds the record for the most wins at Silverstone on the 2024 grid.

With wins spanning seven years and three different models of car, not to mention a further eight podiums in that time, Ingram has clearly found a sweet spot around Silverstone.

The first of his victories came in 2016; after leading the early stages, the MG Triple Eight Racing duo of Ash Sutton and Josh Cook managed to overhaul Tom in his Toyota Avensis, but post-race penalties for both cars handed Ingram an unlikely win.

He followed that up with another victory in 2017 which came to an early close owing to a red flag. But it was in 2018 that he took arguably his most memorable win at Silverstone, charging through the field from 15th on the grid.

In 2019, Ingram took the only double victory of the current field overcoming wet conditions and a fourth-place grid spot in Race 1, while contact from Jason Plato and yet more rain wasn’t enough to stop him from taking Race 2 as well.

Ingram’s most recent win came in his title-winning season of 2022. Starting fourth, he’d made his way into third by Turn 1 and when Adam Morgan and Cook came to blows ahead, he needed no further invitation, going on to win by a convincing margin.

Three wins

Colin Turkington

Astonishingly, a driver of Colin Turkington’s calibre – and one that has been competing on and off in the series for two decades – has only won at Silverstone three times, such is the circuit’s unpredictability.

As reigning champion in 2015, Turkington was fighting to retain his title coming into the penultimate round at Silverstone. For Race 3, he was third on the grid in his Team BMR Volkswagen CC and by the start of the second tour, he was at the head of the field. Taking an assured win, the Northern Irishmen ensured he remained in that season’s title fight.

He’d have to wait another five years to taste champagne at Silverstone again, but it would be worth the wait. Title rival Ash Sutton battled his way past early on, and he went on to dice with Rory Butcher. The duelling pair lost ground as a result and Turkington slipped past the pair of them. Cammish was next to be passed, and before he’d had a chance to home in on Ingram, he suffered a puncture, handing the Team BMW man the victory.

In 2023, Turkington would take the most recent win at Silverstone in Race 3. Having launched from fifth on the grid, a fierce battle amongst the top five broke out, but the four-time champion eventually took the lead from Dan Rowbottom and didn’t look back.

Jake Hill

The leader of the 2024 Drivers’ Championship, Jake Hill also has three wins to his name, each of which came in the three previous visits making him the only driver to take more than one win since 2021. If he’s to retain his points advantage, he’ll need to make it four wins in four years at Silverstone.

The first came in 2021 in a race where he started from third on the grid and made light work of the drivers ahead, seizing the lead from Dan Lloyd en route to his first Silverstone victory.

Then, in 2022, he battled through a gaggle of his competitors – Adam Morgan, Gordon Shedden and Sutton – all of whom were vying for second place. Once he’d passed that group, he set about chasing down Butcher and eventually snatched the win.

Launching from third in 2023, tough-to-call conditions meant Hill opted for the wet tyres and immediately surged past Ingram and Turkington – both of whom were on dries – and into an impressive victory amidst challenging weather.

One win

Ash Sutton

Having won titles in 2017, 2020 and 2021, it seemed unlikely that Ash Sutton hadn’t won a race at Silverstone, but during one of the most dominant title-winning seasons in recent memory (2023), he arrived at the penultimate round with it as the only circuit where he was yet to taste victory.

His outstanding form that year and a wrong call on dry tyres in Race 1 resulted in one of his greatest drives to date. He started in 23rd on the grid for Race 2, but somehow, he carved a path through the field to take his first and only Silverstone victory, which also put him within touching distance of a record-equalling fourth title.

Dan Cammish

Napa Racing team-mate to Sutton, Dan Cammish also notched a solitary win at Silverstone, but his came much earlier in 2020. A lights-to-flag victory for Cammish is the kind of performance he needs to replicate in 2024 if he wants to bring himself back into contention for the Drivers’ title.
