2024 F1 British Grand Prix results: Hamilton takes record-breaking ninth Silverstone win
07 July 2024Lewis Hamilton has secured a record-breaking ninth win at a single circuit, after a titanic tussle with compatriots George Russell and Lando Norris for the 2024 British Grand Prix victory, as well as the ever-present Max Verstappen.
Silverstone was once again shrouded in uncertainty with rain falling as the 20 F1 cars headed out onto the grid.
Intermediates were the tyre of choice for the sighting laps but by the time of the formation lap, the track was dry as a bone. The threat of rain, however, was a continuous presence on all of the team’s radars, threatening showers an hour into the race.
For the first time, it was an all-British trio that launched from the top three grid slots with home race glory and possible history-making results in their sights.

As the lights went out, it was George Russell who maintained his lead ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris into Abbey, but Max Verstappen made his move on Norris at The Loop and up into third.
In the early laps, it was Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez making the most progress; the Mexican getting past Zhou Guanyu, Valtteri Bottas and Esteban Ocon while the Monegasque jumped from 11th to eighth on Lap 1 and took Lance Stroll on Lap 14.
On Lap 15, the inevitable happened. The rain returned, allowing Norris to close back in on Verstappen and retake third into Stowe. McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri followed suit at the same corner two laps later.
With the rain intensifying, Hamilton closed in on his team-mate and snatched the lead from the pole sitter at Stowe. A lap later, both Mercedes drivers slipped off the track at Abbey, allowing Norris to close and take second from Russell. Norris was on a charge, and quickly closed on Hamilton to take the lead at Abbey.
The sister McLaren of Piastri was also on the prowl, and took third from Russell round the outside of Aintree, followed by Hamilton into Stowe to make it a McLaren 1-2.
At just under half race distance, the top six were separated by just 10 seconds, but with rainfall increasing, the front runners were considering the switch to interest.
Verstappen and Sainz were the first to pull the pin and head for the pits, with Norris, Hamilton and Russell doing the same a lap later. The early stop for the Red Bull enabled him to leapfrog Russell.
Just six laps later, the Kings Lynn native was forced to retire his Mercedes with a water system issue.
By lap 39, the track had dried sufficiently for a switch back to slick tyres and Hamilton and Verstappen were the first to make the call taking on Softs and Hards respectively. Norris came in a lap later also taking on the Softs but by the time he rejoined the track, Hamilton had seized the lead of the race.
In the final laps, a charging Verstappen used the longevity of his Hards to close in and overhaul Norris, but ultimately couldn’t do the same to Hamilton’s lead.
In the end, Hamilton took a record-breaking ninth win at a single circuit and his 104th overall. Verstappen claimed second and Norris third.

FULL REPORT: Hamilton takes record-breaking ninth Silverstone win
Lewis Hamilton, nine-time winner at Silverstone and winner of the 2024 British Grand Prix said:
"I know, it's been since 2021 [since the last win]. Every day, [I'm] getting up trying to fight to train, to put my mind to the task and work as hard as I can with this amazing team – and this is my last British Grand Prix with the team, so I wanted to win this so much for them because I love them and I appreciate them so much.
"All the hard work they've been putting in all over these years. I'm forever grateful to everyone in this team – everyone at Mercedes, all of our partners and our incredible fans. I could see them lap by lap as I was coming around.
"There's there's just no greater feeling than to finish at the front here.
"It's so tough [to go without a win]. I think for anyone. The important thing is how you continue to get up and continue to dig deep, even when you feel like you're at the bottom of the barrel.
"I mean there's definitely been days between 2021 and here where I didn't feel like I was good enough to get back to where I am today, but the important thing is that I had great people around me, continuing to support me and my team.
"Every time I turn up and see them putting in the effort, it encouraged me to do the same thing. Otherwise, my friends, when I see them around the world, they have been so supportive.
"A big, big, thank you to everybody back at the factory, and everyone here. I love you guys, and God bless you."
