Sprint Race in detail
A frenetic start to the Tissot Sprint Race meant it was anyone’s guess into Village, with Francesco Bagnaia, Jorge Martín, Aleix Espargaró and Enea Bastianini all jostling for position.
Emerging from the chaos, it was Martín who led the field onto the Wellington Straight for the first time.
A clumsy moment for Franco Morbidelli sent him spearing into the back of Marco Bezzecchi at Abbey on Lap 1, but thankfully both riders walked away from the incident.
On the second tour, Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder battled over fifth position through Village and on corner exit, the future team-mates made contact.
Ever the opportunist, Marc Márquez took advantage to slice underneath the pair of them. Acosta attempted a retaliation into The Loop, but couldn’t make the move stick.
Having settled into a rhythm, Bastianini began to close on Martín at the start of Lap 3. After another two laps, Bagnaia made an uncharacteristic mistake, crashing out of fourth into The Loop.
On the run up towards Copse, Bastianini made his intentions known, diving to the inside of race leader Martín.
Although he ran wide on the exit enabling Martín back through, the Italian rider launched another attack into Stowe later that same lap, and claimed the lead for his own.
From that point on, Bastianini extended his gap at the front to win comfortably from Martín and pole man Espargaró in third.
Marc Márquez crashed out of fourth place late on elevating Brad Binder to a well-earned fourth and Pedro Acosta to fifth.
