Lewis Hamilton's Sprint glory overshadowed by Chinese Grand Prix disqualification

Lewis Hamilton showcased all the skill that earned him seven titles in Sprint Qualifying shootout, storming to pole before holding off the advances of Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen in the race.

By the chequered flag, he’d streaked six seconds clear to claim his first victory in red in front of a delighted Shanghai crowd.

The Chinese Grand Prix itself proved a tougher affair for Hamilton. Struggling in the hotter conditions of Saturday’s Qualifying, he lined up fifth on the grid.

Then, the Ferrari drivers came together in a first-corner clash at the start of the 56-lap contest.

Having let team-mate Charles Leclerc through to chase down George Russell, Lewis then became the only driver in the top six to stop twice in an attempt to come back at a charging Verstappen.

After the race, his sixth-place finish was stripped away after his car failed post-race checks due to excessive skid block wear.

Russell rises to the occasion in Shanghai

Just as he did in the Melbourne season opener, George Russell quietly impressed in Shanghai.

While he came home a distant fourth in the Sprint, the Mercedes driver came alive when it mattered most, with his final Q3 lap securing a brilliant second on the grid for the Chinese Grand Prix.

Russell got a clean start and looked to challenge Piastri into Turn 1, But the Australian defended well allowing team-mate Lando Norris to slip past the Mercedes at Turn 1.

An undercut saw Russell reclaim second during the pit stops, though Norris ultimately retook the position.

From there, Russell settled into a steady rhythm, bringing the car home for a well-earned podium, his second consecutive third-place finish after Australia.

Lando Norris made to fight for Chinese Grand Prix podium

Lando Norris endured a rollercoaster weekend. His Sprint Qualifying ended in disappointment after a lock-up at the hairpin left him sixth on the grid, and in the pack at the start of the race, he lost further ground.

He battled back though, pulling off a late move on Lance Stroll to snatch the final point in eighth.

Saturday’s qualifying wasn’t smooth for Norris either, abandoning his final run but still securing third on the grid for the Grand Prix proper.

He made amends with a stunning launch off the line, diving past Russell at Turn 1.

Though unable to challenge his team-mate Piastri in the opening stint, Norris reclaimed second from Russell after the stops.

A long brake pedal hampered his chances of a late charge for the win, but it was another strong haul of points for the Brit.

Bearman bounces back

Haas’ Ollie Bearman put his demons from the Australian Grand Prix to rest in Shanghai. Though his 15th place finish in the Sprint left more to be desired, the 19-year-old delivered a composed and aggressive drive in the Chinese Grand Prix.

He carved through the midfield on the medium tyres, executing a series of clean, confident overtakes. Elevated by the post-race penalties, Bearman’s final result stood at an excellent eighth place.

McLaren’s title tug-of-war intensifies

The spotlight now shines on McLaren’s rising stars; Piastri delivered a masterclass in Shanghai, controlling the Chinese Grand Prix from the front to take a commanding victory.

The result sees the Australian close the gap to team-mate Norris in the standings, setting an early stage for an intriguing intra-team title battle.

With both drivers in top form, the fight for McLaren supremacy is heating up. Can Norris hold his ground, or will Piastri’s consistency tip the scales?

One thing’s for sure, this is an F1 rivalry in its infancy. As the season progresses and the stakes get ever higher, tensions will almost certainly bubble over.
